Special Olympics Special Smiles Healthy Athletes/

Young Athletes Program

On June 3, 2017, HDHA members Linda Austin, Christen Coloma, Gerraine Hignite, Melinda Lau, Lenora Marks, Michele McTague, Ellie Kelley-Miyashiro along with SADHA members Karen Alonzo, Ezekiela Eugenio, Lisa Forbes, Julia Luu, Kelly Manzano, Cindy Nguyen, Jana Sasaki volunteered at Special Olympics – Special Smiles Healthy Athlete/ Young Athletes Program event held at University of Hawaii – Manoa.

Oral hygiene instruction and nutrition information were shared with the athletes, as well as mouth guard preparation/delivery to athletes. Approximately 224 athletes and unified partners were screened and educated in Special Smiles Healthy Athlete, while 46 children between the ages of 2-7 yrs were screened as part of the Young Athletes Program.; a small percentage need urgent care and we hope they will be able to find a provider with the assistance of Special Olympics Hawaii.
